  19. Are we ever likely to see a commercial C++ compiler on the ST?

  21. Having got fed up with seeing yet another C compiler being released
  22. (there must be 10 or so now) I contacted the UK distributor of Lattice
  23. C. Apparently Lattice have a C++ *translator* for the Amiga but do not
  24. intend to release it on the ST until they see how well version 5 of
  25. their C compiler sells (in UK, Europe, USA ?).

  27. g++ I hear you say - too big and no support I reply.

  29. Rather than flood the net with mutual complaint messages I suggest any of
  30. us who do want to see a commercial C++ compiler on the ST contact the
  31. appropriate distributors and compiler developers and lobby them.

  33. Alternatively, are there any C/C++ developers listening who are adventurous
  34. enough to release the *first* accessible Object-Oriented language for the ST?
  35. (NB Little Smalltalk is not suitable for large scale development and the
  36. Dortmund Smalltalk-80 is too expensive (about 600 sterling) and needs 4Mb)

  93.         I presently use a commercial product called 'Partner ST'. It is quite
  94. good as a multi accessory but it occupies a lot of space. Fine on my mega 4 at
  95. work but a real pain on my 1040 at home, and as for my even lower paid side
  96. kick who can only afford a 520, well..... The only part of the accesory that I
  97. use constantly is the Reverse Polish Notation calculator (like an HP calc).
  98.         Query? Does anyone know of a good PD desk accessory RPN calculator? An
  99. address would be good a UUcode even better. Thanks in advance.

  115. That is wrong.  The TT shifter is different from the STE shifter. The
  116. TT shifter gives you the new TT resolutions (640x480 16 color, 320x480
  117. 256 color, and 1280x960 monochrome), with the enhanced palette of 4096
  118. colors in color resolutions.  The STE shifter has the enhanced palette,
  119. but not the new resolutions.  The STE shiftger also allows fine screen
  120. scrolling by allowing arbitrary (wordwise) screen alignment. The TT
  121. shifter requires 8 byte alignment of screens. The two shifters are
  122. compatible in that they are located at the same place in memory.
  123. That's what gives us ST video compatibility on the TT.  But it is not
  124. possible to use the STE shifter to get TT video modes.

  141. Atari Corp. policy is that we offer developer support to registered
  142. developers, not to end users.  I know how you feel about the issue,
  143. and I'm sorry if you feel "left out."  It seems to me, though, that it
  144. just wouldn't be cost effective for us to offer the level of technical
  145. support we give to developers to end users.

  147. Incidentally, developers who ask can get STE release notes from Atari.
  148. I believe it is a requirement to be "re-registered" under our new
  149. nondisclosure policy.  This new registration is free of charge for
  150. registered developers and will allow us to provide better support to
  151. developers actively working on ST products.  This is part of the
  152. improved developer support program which was announced at COMDEX.

  172. You mistakenly imply that Atari Corporation (the parent of all
  173. subsidiaries) has "kept the UK waiting."  This is not the case.  The UK
  174. has TOS 1.4.  If they don't want to manufacture or ship it, that's their
  175. call. We don't tell them how to run their operations.

  177. (I don't really know that much about the subs: for example, I think
  178. they order ROMs from Atari Taiwan.  The point is that Atari Corporation
  179. has provided all subs with TOS 1.4, and from that point on it's up to
  180. the sub.)
